I'm a Peapodder...

...and I'm so excited.

No, I don't know this blogger, but it was my first glimpse of the Doughboy, and he's an old friend.

...to Gorton's and there are many, many others of all varieties. I really enjoyed chatting with the representatives. Sometimes we touched on things that are personally helpful -- an idea for a volunteer campaign via AARP -- and some are very blog related. The Land of Lakes recipe brochures are one example of something I thought of immediately for my blog buddies. Though I loved the delicious food at the Land of Lakes booth, as well as meeting Pioneer Woman, were terrific for me, too. 

I thought I'd seen just about every booth in the exhibition hall, but as I was making one last round in the last hour I saw the Peapod booth. I'd heard of Peapod, Stop and Shop's online shopping and delivery service, but I assumed -- so wrongly! -- that it was too expensive. Spurred on by a twenty dollar coupon I decided to look at it this afternoon, and if it worked for me I would order from it. 

What a find! I love living in Manhattan, but as I've written before, it is pricey, and groceries are very pricey. I've thought of joining a big quantity store, and there's now one in Manhattan, but with taxi fare home and some limit on what I can carry, it wasn't good economic sense. Generally, I also don't need five pounds of almost anything at a time. I did stock up on seltzer -- one of my staples -- and paper towels, but otherwise I ordered just what I need for the next ten days. I was careful not to get too much and worry that half of it would spoil. The prices were very reasonable and it was a temptation to buy bags of the potato chips I like at $1.00/bag, more than a dollar less than the grocery. Luckily I resisted the temptation and stuck to one bag of chips. There is a delivery fee, tax and tip, but I still have saved more than enough to make it worthwhile.

My groceries are scheduled for Friday afternoon and I am so excited to be a peapodder. I know I can find my buddies, the Doughboy and the Fisherman, save money and time. Hurray for Peapod! Does anyone else use online grocery services?

I'm getting used to back to normal at home today. I went to exercise class first thing this morning, did a few errands and picked up just a few things at the grocery, pre-Peapod. I've got my library work tomorrow afternoon and a very fun excursion tomorrow morning. I'll be blogging about my excursion. Please stop by tomorrow night.

BlogHer Was Great...

...but it's also great to be home. The flight this afternoon actually arrived ahead of schedule. My suitcase was just where American Airlines promised it would be and it feels so nice to be blogging on my desktop, with all of my pictures downloaded.

When I posted about doughnut puffs -- the yummiest breakfast ever -- I had a request for the recipe. I have five copies of the recipe folder that Land of Lakes had at BlogHer13 and some coupons, too. Just let me know if you would like one. I will be happy to send them to the first five bloggers who leave a comment. I know my internist wouldn't agree, but there's something wonderful about baking with butter.

Besides BlogHer I had two other treats while I was in Chicago. My friend, K, and I spent Sunday at the Art Institute, one of my favorite museums anywhere. We saw a great show on Impressionism and fashion, with Impressionist paintings from many museums. I also stopped at a show of Byzantine Treasures from the British Museum. It was a small show, but each piece was fascinating.

I got to meet my sweet, sweet blogger buddy, Deanna, who blogs at "Snippets from Springdale." If you don't visit her blog, you are missing a treat. Deanna was as lovely and fun as I had expected and I definitely have a friend in Chicago.

I'm still unpacking my BlogHer treasures and realizing that after two weeks of fun and a few travel misadventures, it's back to normal. I've got a medical appointment tomorrow, need to do some paperwork and stop at the bank. Hope your Tuesday is fun and holds no misadventures!

When Life Hands You a Lemon...

...have a watermelon margarita.

For the second week in a row, I didn't get back to New York as scheduled. I'm still in Chicago, and my return flight is scheduled for 2:00. I was #42 on the standby list last night and the American Airlines customer service rep let me know they were getting ready to put cots out at the airport. I graciously accepted her offer of a hotel voucher that would pay half the cost of a room and spent the night at a Holiday Inn. There is a nice restaurant here and I treated myself to a watermelon margarita, which took the edge off any travel difficulties. 

BlogHer13 was great and I'm eager to hear where next year's conference will be. It's either East or West Coast. For economy I hope we're in the east and for fun, I hope it's west, though if it is, I'm thinking of taking the train.

Off to the airport. My luggage was supposed to travel east on an earlier plane and I'm looking forward to our reunion.

The Calm Before the Storm

This is the scene at BlogHer13 when you arrive an hour and fifteen minutes before the day begins. Isn't it great I can be an eyewitness for you? I am -- actually quite contentedly -- blogging from Starbucks well in advance of the day's activities. I thought it was odd the shuttle bus coming over to the conference site had a handful of people. I opened the BlogHer schedule and saw that the day started at 9:00 this morning and not 7:30, as it did yesterday. Alas, that extra hour of sleep would have been nice, but this hour of quiet to blog is nice, too. I'm enjoying iced coffee, blogging and especially feeling so relaxed and ready for the day.

Yesterday was terrific. I met some great bloggers, Pioneer Woman -- what a sweetheart -- and heard terrific presentations. I also won a gift card thanks to Walgreens and will be coming home with a few fun things for a gardening giveaway. I spent the evening with my dear friend K. who joined me here to visit and see Chicago, and we are having fun. K. Is seeing museums by day and we had dinner and saw a movie in the evening, and of course talked and laughed. One of my retirement goals is to spend time with family and friends and this gift of time is the best. 

I know this will be a super Saturday for me and I hope it is for all of you, too.

(Almost) Live from 30,000 Feet

As with so many things in life I had a plan for the last two days. Yesterday, the schedule was a nice lunch with my friend, Sue. I'd then go the airport and home via LaGuardia Airport. First there was a major delay and then LaGuardia was closed because of an accident. It became clear that the plan would have to change. I rebooked my flight for this morning -- thanks, Delta Customer Service -- found an inexpensive hotel and spent the night in Orlando. I had good air conditioning and free wi-fi. I treated myself to a diet coke and peanut M&Ms and watched CNN coverage of the little prince for the evening.

Now I'm 30,000 feet over the earth and heading home. No exercise class, as I'd planned and a few fewer errands than I'd planned, but once more a lesson in letting go of plans. So glad to be able to get home. I do have laundry to do and I've got to repack for BlogHer '13 beginning on Thursday.

Despite this little glitch, it was a great trip. The conference was a terrific experience. I knew having a spinal tumor was rare, but this gave me an understanding of just how rare. But I also acquired a group of friends who share this tiny world with me, which makes it a lot less lonely. I had a great time at Epcot and Disney. I was thrilled to be able walk all over the Magic Kingdom and even took a few rides. I got to share it with my friend, Sue, who is a high school buddy, and we had a lot of fun. We laughed at the Bear Jamboree and loved "It's a Small World" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

I'm 30,000 feet over Virginia as I type, but need to wait to send it when I'm off the plain. I just enjoyed my cookies and coffee and am feeling appreciative of every little thing. Take-off, smooth flight, cookies, coffee and the million little things that make a day. Buttercup is counting her blessings!

Live from the Magic Kingdom

When I was growing up almost every Sunday night was spent watching "The Wonderful World of Disney." My dream for all of my growing up years was going to California and visiting Disneyland. The years drifted by, and my dream slipped away. Outside of one day spent at EuroDisney in the early 1990s, Disney grew far from my thoughts. I've traveled a lot, but never has Disneyland or Disneyworld been my destination. Until this week...

I'm tired and my feet are especially tired. But it's not very often I get to live a dream that's over fifty years old and that feels great. Live from the Magic Kingdom, a toast to living our dreams!

Not Just Movie Stars...

Though this little guy is a cutie -- Paws -- he's not a film idol. But what he represents, the Spinal Cord Tumor Association, and its conference is the reason I'm in Orlando.

The conference started last night and it's been great, with very interesting sessions. I'm taking a little break right now by the pool, but will be in sessions this afternoon. This morning's program included a  presentation on fitness and I'm thinking of getting a fit bit. Does anyone have one?

Live from Florida...

...via iPad. Easy peasy flight and I am thoroughly enjoying being in Florida. It's cooler than New York and I've gotten to meet some great people...

I would (almost) never take a picture with my jawline being so prominent, but when I get to meet one of my long-standing film idols I just went with the moment.

Had a great time at Epcot yesterday and was delighted to meet another film idol. 

I saw Canada, England and France and enjoyed my visit very much. Definitely need a return visit. There is so much more to see.

I've still got a lot to learn about blogging on my iPad, but I think this went well for a first effort. I am happy to be able to let our Genevieve Jones winners know they will be getting the beautiful cards. Paula, in Alaska, and Lynda in Tennessee, I will be in touch for your addresses. Still figuring how to do links in blog posts, otherwise I'd link to both of your great blogs.

Post Called on Account of Heat

I was all set to post yesterday afternoon and announce the winner of the giveaway for the Genevieve Jones cards. But I was feeling less than 100% and ended up napping instead. I think the heat got to me more than I had anticipated. I will announce the winner -- actually winners -- in the next few days. Though I leave for Florida -- where it's slightly cooler than New York today -- this morning I will be attempting to post via iPad. And yes, it's winners. I found two extra cards from the set and they will go to a second winner.

Please keep hydrated and no unnecessary running around, and I'll try and remember this, too.

Everything I Knew is New Again

You know me as Buttercup, but I'm also known as the new kid on the block.

I've started my two volunteer activities. I've also joined a senior program and have gone to two exercise classes. I'm settling in at the Library and everything there is becoming more familiar, including the physical layout, my colleagues and the computer program I am using. I'm equally happy to see the results of my efforts appear on the Seminary website.

For someone who is pretty outgoing -- me -- getting to meet people in every new situation I find myself in is the toughest part of my retirement transition. I feel like the new kid on the block, and I am. I have chosen to try a number of different activities, but right now it's an uncomfortable time. I haven't met so many new people or been in so many new situations since I moved to New York in 1975. 

When I would start a job in the past I always told myself that it takes six months just to know where the bathroom is. In six months I will have figured out what works for me and what doesn't and the host of new faces will include lots of familiar ones. But now I am working through the uncomfortable on my way to comfortable and everything I knew is new again.  

I had a great day yesterday in Philadelphia visiting with friends. We didn't do much sight-seeing -- a return trip is in my mind for the fall -- but I did find one sight I'd like to share. From my research I believe this is Christ Church, where among many others, Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin were parishioners. The steeple caught my eye, and I was totally unaware of the magnificent history of this congregation, which dates from 1695.

Today my goal is to keep cool. The temperature is predicted to be over one hundred -- not usual for us -- and I'm taking it easy this afternoon. Keep cool and have a healthy, happy Monday. 

Happy, Happy 1,000

Amazingly -- to me -- this is my 1,000th post. I am delighted to be able to write this. When I first began blogging in the winter of 2009 I couldn't see beyond the first few posts, but I liked blogging and I just kept writing. As importantly people kept reading.

This is a thank you to those who kept reading. Without my blog friends I never would have kept writing, and my life would be far lonelier. Thanks for the comments, the smiles, the laughter, the shared tears. Thanks for friendship, fun and visits, in Buttercupland, New York and throughout the country.

Here's to 1,000 more posts and here's to all of you! 

(Neoprene) Pink Saturday

My colleagues were very generous when I retired and I knew I wanted an iPad to mark my retirement. On Wednesday I bought it and today I went for my orientation. Our teacher was very good and I think I've got (most of) the basics. I spent some time earlier downloading applications and Blogger was at the top of the list. I am hoping to blog while I'm away and this will be a lot easier than using the tiny little keys on my phone to do a blog post. I've got this bright pink case to travel with and a baby blue stand to use.  

I took a number of pictures and just couldn't get one I really liked. The chair that the iPad is resting on was part of my grandmother's bedroom furniture and goes back to the 1940's. My mother redid the seat and I am so glad to have it. I wish we had kept the rest of the set. The head board was the same design and very old-fashioned, and I adored it. 

Now I'm about to try and figure out how to see my kindle books on my iPad. O Technology!

Happily, It's Random 5 Friday

Somehow the week flew by and once again it's time for Random 5 Friday with Nancy and our blog buddies at "A Rural Journal."

Yes, that's a giant gold button

1) For what seems like decades -- though I know it's only a few weeks -- the temperature during the day was under eighty degrees. This inspired me to do more walking than usual and I came upon one of my favorite stores. Tender Buttons. I don't knit or sew, and I still haven't gotten to my crocheting lessons, but anyone in search of interesting, unusual and/or adorable buttons, this is the place.

2) For what may be the millionth time in my life -- yes, the second time I am wildly over-stating in the same post -- I waited too long in a season to get clothes/shoes I needed. First I had the bathing suit episode and now all that are left in the shoe stores are white sandals or sandals with very high heels. Neither of which are what I am looking for. Today, I should be buying a pair of fall shoes to wear with pants, but it just seems too early.

3) Single serving cups of ice cream are the greatest impediments to gluttony (and calories) I know. I get my taste of ice cream and don't run the risk of remembering there is ice cream in the freezer at midnight.  

4) Five days until I leave for Orlando. This is the reason for my frantic sandal shopping today.

5) Thirteen days until I leave for Chicago and BlogHer. I am really looking forward to meeting Deanna, who blogs at Snippets from Springdale. She is an extraordinary photographer and her blog is so much fun to visit.

For someone without full-time employment it's been a busy week and I'm looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow is an easy day, but Sunday I'm spending the day in Philadelphia. Monday, I'm back to my 9:05 a.m. exercise class, but that's a post for another day.

Countdown to 1000 Posts...Genevieve Jones Giveaway

Happily, I'm able to post almost every day and this is #997. This giveaway in the "Countdown to 1,000 Posts" celebration is a great favorite of mine. If you're a fan of John James Audubon, you will want to be part of this. If you're not a fan of Audubon, but enjoy birds and nature, you will want to be part of this. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't enjoy these beautiful cards and I am happy to mail them anywhere in the world.

Today's giveaway are four cards done by Genevieve Jones, who worked fifty years after Audubon. She was inspired by seeing Audubon's "Birds of America" at the Centennial World's Fair in Philadelphia in 1876. She completed five drawings and suddenly died of typhoid fever. Her family completed her work and the drawings are extraordinary. The images are wrapped in a copy of the original flyer that was produced to sell subscriptions. The cards would be a beautiful wall decoration, whether framed separately or grouped in one frame.

Today was an errand day and tomorrow I'm back to my project in the library. I'm going to a retirement party in the evening in Westchester and if I'm really hopping I'm going to try an exercise class in the morning. It's called "Sit and Be Fit," and I'm hoping that it's just the right level of exercise.

It's Turtle Tuesday!

Busy, busy day today and I spent almost all day out and about. That hasn't been my pattern for the last month, but I'm feeling rested and there are so many things I want to do. I may even have to start setting my alarm again in the mornings.

I Don't Feel a Day Over Sixty-Two...

...and it feels great!

I've been on a party round since noon yesterday and it has been so much fun. Pene and I started the celebration of her birthday with a lovely lunch. It was delicious and the high point was rhubarb sorbet. Last night's surprise party for Pene was a warm and sweet evening. Our friend, Carol, the best cook and most gracious hostess I know, put it together and all of the guests kept the surprise. We laughed, talked and ate, and laughed some more. There was champagne for toasts and a beautiful flourless chocolate cake, trimmed in fresh raspberries. As Cole Porter would say, "What a swell party it was."

Today -- officially forty-five minutes ago -- I turned sixty-three and what a good day. The day was full of fun and affection. What I especially liked was how easy and relaxed it was. I started with my morning iced coffee and then met a friend for a casual lunch. Tried to run a couple of errands at Macy's, but they were out of stock, didn't have the color I wanted, etc. I may have more time, but I will stick to shopping on-line. I so enjoyed phone calls, e-cards, delightful mail and lots of fun wishes on Facebook. Sweet Jess sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers and I had dinner with Mary at Luke's Lobster. It's not fancy, but they have the best lobster rolls this side of Maine. 

In the past I've been completely traditional and ordered the lobster roll, but this time we both got the trio of crab, lobster and shrimp rolls. They are half sandwiches, and completely fresh and delicious. The only sides are potato chips and there is no pretense of eating vegetables. I could happily eat here every day, but then of course, it wouldn't be a treat.  

I'm happy to return to my regular life tomorrow. I am so grateful for the good wishes and especially for the relaxed feeling. The latter may come from being retired, but I think it also comes from a deep well of gratitude. I'm grateful for what I've been given, and not unhappy for what I don't have. It took me awhile, but I'll just call it the wisdom of sixty-three. It's been hard won, but so worthwhile.

Pink Saturday on Sunday!

Somehow Pink Saturday on Saturday slipped away, but happily I can still be part of the fun at Pink Saturday   on Sunday.

My optician is at Grand Central Station -- I've been getting my glasses there for at least ten years -- and I made the trek over there last week to pick up my broken glasses. I found these cute folks on the shuttle train that connects Times Square and Grand Central Station. The cars were decorated for the movie, Turbo, which opens at the end of this week. I don't know much about the movie, but the subway advertising is fun and very pink.

  Usually the platform is much more crowded, but I was able to be there at a time outside of rush hour. 

If yesterday was pink Saturday, today is hot Sunday. It is actually 98 degrees, which is hot for anywhere and very hot in New York City. It's not a dry heat at all, and thunder storms are predicted. Tonight I'm going to a surprise 70th birthday party and I'll be there despite the heat and the potential rain.

Once Again, It's Random 5 Friday

Once again, it's Random 5 Friday, thanks to my friend, Nancy, who so graciously hosts this fun get-together.

1) I made a trip to Avenue M -- way out in Brooklyn -- yesterday on the Q line, and found this great mosaic at the subway station. I was so taken with it that I had to feature it today. The Q line goes further into Brooklyn to Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island. I didn't get all the way out yesterday, but I plan to stop in both places later this summer. 

2) I'm only liking Bloglovin. I've found that sometimes when I attempt to comment on a blog I've been reading the comment link doesn't open. When I go back and find the blog -- not via Bloglovin -- the comment link is fine. Has anyone else had this experience? 

3) It's hot, hot, hot in New York. I know it doesn't compare to the west coast, but I do a lot of walking and it's really hot walking around and sitting at bus stops. I've been drinking a lot of iced coffee and abstaining from mega-amounts of ice cream. So far this strategy is working. 

4) I spent this morning decluttering my bedroom dresser. I'm not sure anyone else would see progress, but I threw away a number of expired samples of cosmetics. I've got a way to go, but I'm pleased to keep at this project. 

5) I'm thinking a trip to Virginia this fall or next spring, particularly Charlottesville. I've never been there and it's been on my list to visit for ages. Anyone want to meet me there?

I learned a lot of patriotic music growing up and this song seemed just the right one to feature with my photograph of the American flag. My great wish for America on its birthday is the one in the title. May our flag fly over a country -- and a world -- at peace forever.

I was overwhelmed by the comments to my last post. Thanks and thanks! I had the MRI this morning and it went as well as a contrast -- I received dye so that there would be a clearer picture -- MRI could go. I'm not sure when I will get the results, though I am expecting it will be after the Fourth. I am optimistic and am so grateful for the many prayers and hugs.

The bathing suit, alas, was not a success. I definitely need to lose at least ten pounds to wear it. But that's a post for another day. My old suit will have to do for awhile. I do like to swim a lot and I'm looking forward to some pool time while I'm in Florida.

A Task I Dread

I have two activities this week that I do not look forward to. One is on Wednesday morning when I will have my one year anniversary MRI followup for my spinal cord tumor. I got my referral from my neurosurgeon in a timely fashion and made my appointment in a timely fashion. I'll have a flutter in my stomach as I take the crosstown bus to the radiology office, but I am optimistic that all is well and this task will be out of the way for quite some time. Of course, I wouldn't mind a prayer or two (or three!).

The second activity I have done in the most haphazard fashion and have put it off for a year. It's not nearly as critical, but in a different way, more dreaded. Yes, it's bathing suit shopping. The thought of wrestling elastic tubes on my chubby body is more than I can contemplate, and so I didn't. The one suit I've been wearing is snagged and faded and I need a new suit for my trip to Florida and for the aqua aerobics classes I hope to take later in the summer. Three weeks ago I saw a great collection of bathing suits -- and lots of "Miracle Suits," at greatly reduced prices. Did I try them on? No, I was completely like Scarlett O'Hara and figured I'd be back at the store soon enough. I was back today, carrying two tote bags and a wet umbrella. The great collection I'd seen was now very picked over. I did find two suits -- not too skimpy and without a skirt -- but the line to the dressing room was half a block long.

No, I didn't try on this nice black suit when I saw it three weeks ago.

This afternoon I did something I've never done before. I bought a bathing suit without trying it on. It's the right size, but the odds that it will fit and look good, slim to none. It's bright colored, it's got a slimming panel and it was greatly reduced. I could use a few prayers here, too. 

I'm optimistic that the suit will fit and by the end of this week two tasks that I dread will be completed successfully. Note for next year's calendar: Buy a bathing suit in April!
